Actually, all Four Thirds bodies were dSLR's, and all of them had optical finders. On the other hand, there were definitely Four Thirds dSLR's. There are no Micro Four Thirds dSLR's because Micro Four Thirds is a mirrorless system. I can agree that OVF's "look" better and more "natural", especially in good lighting.īut they have "mirror"-lag and many other disadvantages, (a long list of disadvantages), compared to EVF's, (especially in lower-light).Īnd as mentioned, EVF's allow additional options & features not possible w/ OVF's. Back in the day when you manually focused and it all depended on what you could see through an OVF, they just made OVFs better. kind of late to the party having really good AF but they did get there.īut if you want a real shock about what an OVF can be, get an old film camera Olympus OM1. I got action shots of my dogs with cameras like the Pentax K3 but it took skill and practice. Pentax AF just was not in the same league at that time. but it sure took great action photos of my dogs. I never once took it on a vacation because it was so bulky. But not at all a small body with the D7100. The OVF on my D7100 is pretty good though. I honestly don't understand how people can stand to look through the OVFs on a camera like a Nikon 5200. I use my Pentax KP more because the body is more compact and still has a darn good OVF. It actually held up product release getting that part correct according to press releases from Pentax.īut the K3III I feel is a little big. With the K3III, even though it is a APS-C camera, they gave it an OVF as good as a full frame camera. Hard to believe now, but at one time the general photography enthusiast public used to actually know what penta prisms were. It is in their name, Pentax for Penta prism. Pentax has made a specialty out of what you are asking for. ML's also can have many-many more options & features that are not possible on dSLR's because of the inherent limitations of their mirrors. WHY are you limiting your search to dSLR's, MirrorLess (ML) are now the new standard and even the smallest-sensor, (aka 1/2.3") can have a "large" (electronic) viewfinder (EVF). That is why there are (currently) no m4/3 dSLR's because the OVF would be too small/dark to be usable. So all DX/APS-C are about the same size, (aka some can be penta-prism as opposed to a penta-mirror).Ī FF (dSLR) will inherently have a larger/brighter OVF. The (optical) viewfinder on a dSLR is limited by the sensor size. So, now I’m on a quest to find the smallest dslr that still has the biggest brightest viewfinder, regardless of the brand of camera. I recently took them out for a bit together and never really realized how much bigger the viewfinders are in the D7000 & D200. A little backstory, I started out on a Nikon D50 which I still own. Hey all, thanks in advance for helping me out. ![]()
